Authors in Bloom Blog Hop

Welcome and thank you for dropping by to celebrate the

6th Annual Authors in Bloom Blog Hop!

For ten days from March 27th-April 5th, dozens of authors have gotten together to share a recipe, a gardening tip, or some other inspiration that you, our readers, might enjoy. Giveaways and prizes abound as you “hop” from one site to the next, but to be eligible for the Grand Prize (A Kindle Fire or Nook–winner’s choice–along with a 2nd prize of a $25 gift card), you’ll have to visit each and every author’s site and either leave a comment with your email address, or enter their Rafflecopters. Some contests are only open to US residents, so check the individual rules at each site. Contest ends at 11:59 p.m. on April 5th, and prizes will be announced by April 7th. Winners will be listed at both the first (Dianne Venetta) and last (Bloomin Thyme) websites.

In addition to my gardening tip and recipe, I’m giving away an e-book copy of

(A Practical Guide to Improving Health, Fitness, and Well-being for Desk Dwellers and Couch Potatoes).

(Contest open to US and International residents. Contest ends April 5th at midnight.)

To enter my contest, simply leave a comment below with your email address (in the format of: janedoe(at)gmail(dot)com), and share your best tip for staying fit while reading/writing your way to fulfilling your dreams…

And don’t forget to visit all the other author sites to enter to win the grand prize!

Now, I’d love to share one of my passions with you that I’m sure everyone can get on board with. It’s still early to celebrate Earth Day (April 22nd), but as far as I’m concerned, every day is Earth Day and now is a great time to plan a clean up of your town or neighborhood after the long winter. I don’t know about your area, but even though I live out in the country, I’m astonished and saddened by the amount of litter I see along the roadways this time of year. In the spirit of taking care of our Mother Earth, I’ve organized a local “Clean Sweep” event for the day after Earth Day. If you live anywhere near Tolland or Granville, MA., please join us. Residents will be out in force, making the throughway to the Berkshires that much more beautiful for travelers and visitors to our lovely hilltop towns. See our FB Events Page for details and to sign up. If you can’t make it to ours, organize one of your own, or even take a hike along your favorite route and bring a trash bag or two to fill. If we all pitch in, we can make a difference toward keeping America beautiful.

Don’t forget to recycle!

Here’s my gardening tip:

Add a healthy dose of manure tea to your soil every couple of weeks throughout the growing season.

Manure Tea Recipe

I know this doesn’t sound the least bit appealing, but brewed and used correctly, your plants will love it. Give your garden the boost it needs to produce incomparably hearty veggies or bright fragrant flowers.

It’s important to start with composted or aged manure since fresh manure may contain harmful bacteria like E. Coli. You can usually buy it from local farmers, but since you won’t need a truck load, you can find it in bags at your local garden shop. Whether from poultry, cows, horses, sheep, or even bats, manure is nutrient rich and loaded with microbes essential for healthy soil, but in its raw form may be too acidic for most plants and can “burn” out the roots. Mixing it with water, steeping it, and further diluting it to the correct strength isn’t rocket science, but it might take a bit of practice to get the blend just right. Gardeners often amend their soil with composted manure at the beginning and end of the season, but the nutrients wash out quickly and the smell is sometimes a bit hard to take…unless you love it like I do, lol. Applying manure tea every few weeks throughout the growing season is the perfect compromise.

You’ll need a five gallon bucket, a generous shovel full of manure, and water. Put the manure in the bucket, fill with water and mix until  “muddy.” Cover and let sit for three days, stirring daily to break up solid waste and allow for nutrients to infuse the water. This will likely still be too strong to put on plants directly, so you’ll want to thin it further by adding more water until it comes out the color of iced tea. I recommend keeping the bucket next to the garden and using an old sauce pan as a ladle. Mix a quart with a gallon of water in a watering can. Stir and pour around plants, letting the goodness seep into the soil.

Keep a lid on the five gallon bucket and apply as needed every couple of weeks through the growing season when plants start to fade or slow their growth. Enjoy watching those plants thrive!

Since we also want to maximize our own nutrition, here’s a yummy smoothie recipe from OVERCOME YOUR SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE…

Beets & Greens Smoothie

This one is my own concoction and has taken some time to perfect. Greens like kale and spinach have tons of necessary vitamins and minerals but how many of us eat them as often as we should? There’s far more calcium in our leafy pals than there is in dairy and none of the saturated fat and inflammatory properties. They are loaded with phytonutrients that have many healing benefits to the body and should be eaten often. Since our American diets don’t consist of nearly enough of these green leafy superfoods, juicing and adding them to smoothies is a great way to fit them in. However, greens can have a very…um…earthy taste. Beets and root vegetables are also loaded with micronutrients, minerals, and antioxidants, but again, American diets don’t provide nearly enough of these nutrition powerhouses. Since adding even a slice of beet to your smoothie or juice can make it downright unpalatable, I’ve discovered some tricks to getting these all important veggies into my diet.

8 ounces filtered water

½ a small fresh beet (cut in two pieces) NOTE: A little bit of beet goes a long way for flavor. It’s also a potent liver cleanser so more is not better. Try one slice your first time around and decide from there if you need more.

1 cup of kale leaves chopped (I prefer to use baby kale and remove the center stems or ribs)

1 large carrot (cut into pieces)

1 large apple (cut into wedges)

½ avocado (peeled and pitted)

A slice of lemon (peel and pith removed)

A 1 inch slice of fresh ginger root

½ cup ice (tastes best when cold)

Blend all ingredients on high for 1-2 minutes or until smooth, or use the “Whole juice” setting on your Blendtec or Vita-mix. The result is a thick, creamy, smoothie with a bit of a bite and a gently sweet aftertaste. Although it may look awful in terms of the brownish/green color, I assure you, the taste isn’t half bad. I drink it as a meal replacement on days when I’m on the road through lunch and don’t want to be tempted to eat out. It’s filling, nutritious, and dare I say…tasty.

I love hearing about new smoothie recipes so if you have one to share, mention it below or visit my website and leave me a note on my contact page, or find me on Facebook or twitter and spread the smoothie love. Let me know you’ve visited my FB page, followed me on twitter, or signed up for my newsletter and you’ll earn extra entries for my e-book giveaway!

Enjoy the hop, and do something good for you and the planet today…

Peace and blessings,

An Early Spring

Hello Dear Readers,

It seems February has slipped past me while my mind was fraught with distraction. Unfortunately, my writing has taken a back seat to greater concerns about what’s happening in our country and around the world. I won’t get political here, but I will suggest that being an informed and active citizen is essential, however now more than ever. Get involved in your community, take an active role in our democracy, and stand up for what you believe in. You aren’t alone, and together, we CAN make a difference.

Now, onto what’s been happening here in my writer’s cave as I fight the urge to procrastinate further.

I enjoyed this past week’s warm-up and ventured off to the beach for my birthday–an annual tradition I founded years ago to celebrate reconnection with the vast water element that is so much a part of my Piscean constitution. Ironically, it was a beautiful day here in the Berkshires, but by the time I reached the shore two hours away, the sky was so cloudy I could barely see past the surf, lol.

A cloudy day at the beach is better than a sunny day at the office!

I took advantage of the time alone, however, to write, reflect, and be in the moment–a useful practice if you want to preserve your mental health during trying times.

Despite the obvious effects of global warming, we’re expecting temps to dip back into the teens later this week. Just the same, having a good hard Spring rain the other night and a few warmer than seasonal days seems to have washed away the doldrums for me (as well as the three inches of ice and remnants of two feet of snow that had covered my deck). It was a much needed boost of Vitamin D and nice to feel the warmth of sun on my face after a dreary winter here in New England.

The month of March will find me working to play catch-up on my writing biz. Among a laundry list of to-do’s and word-count goals to meet, I have a cover to produce for the print edition of LOST BOYS, my second Savage Cinderella Novella. If you loved the original SAVAGE CINDERELLA and haven’t read the series, FINDING HOPE is available for only .99 cents and LOST BOYS, the e-book edition, is only $1.99!

Here’s a bit about this 30k word (130 page) action-packed novella…

Justin’s friend Cody has disappeared, and Brinn is determined to find out why. Despite an escalation in the tensions between them over Cody and Brinn’s complicated friendship, Justin agrees to join her on a journey that leads to the mysterious jungles of Colombia, where whispers of human trafficking bring them face to face with an old enemy.

Brinn and Justin join forces with friends to do the unthinkable—enter the dangerous jungle on a rescue mission, sparking a battle for the lives of nine young boys and a fight for their own survival. Brinn’s haunted past rears its ugly head as she is forced to once again take on a brutal killer. But in risking her life to save her friend, will she lose the one man who has sacrificed everything for her?

Follow Brinn, Justin, Cody, and a cast of new characters through a series of novellas (30-40k word short novels). Each story will bring a new adventure, another crime to solve, and more danger for Brinn and company as they delve into the world of human trafficking and beyond.

Check out the book’s page for purchase links or read a chapter on WATTPAD.

I’m now working on the third installment in the series. Working title…SACRED GROUND. I’ll have more information on that soon!

I hope you’ll join me again this year for the fabulous 6th Annual Authors in Bloom Blog Hop!

Monday, March 27 thru Wednesday, April 5th.

Here’s how to participate: Any time during the ten day event, simply hop from one author’s site to another to see what kind of recipes, gardening tips, or inspirations they have to offer. (I’ll be sharing some ways to Celebrate Earth Day!) You’ll find awesome prizes and giveaways along the way, and don’t forget to gather clues to enter for the GRAND PRIZE–an e-reader of your choice (up to $200 value). A second prize of $25 gift card for winner’s choice of book retailers, available to US and INTL residents, except where prohibited by law. Individual authors will note US or INTL for their giveaway eligibility. Where US or INTL is not specifically noted, US eligibility will apply. The grand prize is available for US entrants only. Winners will be announced by April 7th when we will post the grand prize winners on the main page and the landing page, BloominThyme.

New Release and a Holiday Novella

Happiest and healthiest of holidays, my friends!

I hope you’re all well and enjoying some much-needed relaxation through the holidays. There’s nothing like time with family and friends to help us remember what’s important. It’s been quite a year–a difficult one for so many. As we approach 2017, may we all commit to spreading a spirit of love, peace, and unity with our fellow countrymen and women and our brothers and sisters around the world. If we all do our part to treat each other with respect and dignity, I have faith that love and compassion will triumph over hate and division. We must remember that those things that divide us are not as strong as the common bond of humanity that we share.

Having been terribly distracted by world events these past few months, I’m looking forward to returning my focus to being productive. Although I plan to remain vigilant and continue to do my part as a citizen, I also recognize that forging on in daily life is necessary to bring order out of chaos.

Fortunately, that’s what we writers do! We take a spark of inspiration, feed it with imagination, and cultivate chaos into a garden of beauty that nourishes the heart, mind, and soul. Doesn’t it sometimes feel that way when you read a great book?

In hindsight, 2016 was actually a very productive year for me on the writing/publishing front. In January, I published my first non-fiction title, OVERCOME YOUR SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE, and by year’s end had added two novellas to my Savage Cinderella Novella Series, FINDING HOPE and my latest release, LOST BOYS.

I also republished SAMI’S CHRISTMAS WISH LIST as a stand alone title. I had previously included it as part of the Girls of Thompson Lake box set.

I’ve really enjoyed revisiting the characters from my previous novels and I hope you’ve been able to follow along with their journeys through the tumultuous twists and turns of teen life and young adulthood.

As always, reviews are greatly appreciated!

As for coming plans, I’ve already begun my as yet untitled third novella in the Savage Cinderella Series and hope to have it finished by late Spring.

On the health and fitness front, I’ve been working on an idea for an OYSL 30-day challenge. Wouldn’t it be great to have guided activities to help you eat smarter, and specific tasks to jump start your health and fitness goals? More news on that coming soon!

In the meantime, I’ll be at the Blue Umbrella Book Store in Westfield, MA. on Thursday, January 19th from 6-7 p.m. talking about strong female characters in young adult fiction, and signing books.

I’ll update my events/calendar page with appearances once I have a few more locked in. Thanks so much for sticking with me, reading and reviewing my books, and sharing this crazy writer’s journey with me. I appreciate each and every one of you!

Peace, blessings, and good health in the new year

Happy Holiday and New Releases

Pre-order it NOW!

(A Savage Cinderella Novella, Book #2)

Justin’s friend Cody has disappeared, and Brinn is determined to find out why. Despite an escalation in the tensions between them over Cody and Brinn’s complicated friendship, Justin agrees to join her on a journey that leads to the mysterious jungles of Colombia, where whispers of human trafficking bring them face to face with an old enemy.

Brinn and Justin join forces with friends to do the unthinkable—enter the dangerous jungle on a rescue mission, sparking a battle for the lives of eight young boys and a fight for their own survival. Brinn’s haunted past rears its ugly head as she is forced to once again take on a brutal killer. But in risking her life to save her friend, will she lose the one man who has sacrificed everything for her?

If you haven’t read SAVAGE CINDERELLA, the original novel, check it out here or read it on WATTPAD.

You can also get FINDING HOPE,

book one in the novella series

Only .99 cents for the e-book!

Available in paperback at AMAZON for $7.99

Another project I’ve been working on is revamping and re-releasing SAMI’S CHRISTMAS WISH LIST, a Girls of Thompson Lake Novella, which brings together the characters from the award-winning young adult novels, HEAVEN IS FOR HEROES, ON THIN ICE, and PIECES OF LOVE. You can buy the novels in e-book format individually for $2.99, or get all three exciting stories plus the novella as a bonus in the box set for $3.99.

What’s new is that you can now purchase the novella on its own. Don’t you love this cover? Another winner from Kim Killion of The Killion Group.

pjsharon_samischristmaswishlist_200pxIn this heartwarming, 28,000 word YA holiday novella, all seventeen-year-old Samantha Owens wants for Christmas is a working car, a miraculous improvement in her grades, and a boyfriend who sees her as more than just a friend with benefits. But with a single mom who’s struggling to make ends meet, presents seem unlikely, and with legal troubles looming over her head, she’ll be lucky not to be spending the holiday in juvenile detention. When she’s forced to do community service at the local church, she finds that wishing her life was different won’t make it so, and that avoiding her past may be what’s standing in the way of her future.

It doesn’t help that Travis Vance, a freshman in college and intern for a teen drug and alcohol treatment program, is hanging around and pushing her buttons at every turn. Or that her friends are all going through their own dramas—most of which seem far worse than her own. As she struggles to find peace with a choice she’s made, can Sami bring everyone together to save the church in time for Christmas? Or is hoping for a happy ending one more wish that will never be granted?

Granville Harvest fair 2016

In other news, it’s time once again for the annual Granville Harvest Fair, where I’ll be signing books in my usual spot next to the old public library in Granville center (Granville, MA) on the corner of route 189 and 57. If you’ve ever been out this way, you’ll recognize the Granville Country Store (famous for their amazing cheeses). I’ll be there Columbus Day weekend on Saturday, 10-5, Sunday 12-5, and Monday, 10-5. I hope you’ll round up the family and attend this fabulous harvest fair. There will be great food, dozens of talented crafters, and tons of fun for the kids. Be sure to stop by and say hi!

I’ll also be appearing at the Boston Book Festival on Saturday, October 15th, speaking on a panel about getting self-published e-books into libraries. Several of my books are already available in e-book format in Massachusetts libraries.  It’s the aim of Bibliolabs, in coordination with Library Journal, to make self-published e-books available to readers all across the country in their public libraries. This well-attended annual book festival offers many wonderful workshops for writers and opportunities for readers to connect with their favorite books and authors.

Locally, I’ll be appearing at the Cossitt Library in North Granby, CT. on October 25th from 6-7:45 p.m., speaking to a writer’s group about my writing journey, and spending some hands-on time working on writing prompts (exercises to spark creativity). Please feel free to join us if you have any interest in writing.

Lastly, in preparation for this year’s NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), I’ll be at the Granby Public Library in Granby, CT.  on November 3rd, from 6:30-7:45, speaking about staying healthy while writing/sitting your way to fulfilling your dreams. I’ll share my best weight management and self-care tips from my book OVERCOME YOUR SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE (A Practical Guide to Improving Health, Fitness, and Well-being for Desk Dwellers and Couch Potatoes)

In the meantime, I’m still working on the next installment of Savage Cinderella Novella Series, LOST BOYS. Watch for the cover reveal later this month! If you haven’t read SAVAGE CINDERELLA or the first novella in the series, FINDING HOPE, you can read the novel that started it all, in its entirety on WATTPAD and read the first chapter of FINDING HOPE.

Eighteen-year-old Brinn Hathaway has survived on her own in the Northwest High Country of Georgia since she was left for dead in a shallow grave by the man who kidnapped her as a child. When a young nature photographer, Justin Spencer, catches the wild girl on film and the two form a tentative friendship, Brinn must decide if coming out of hiding is worth the hope—and the danger—that may await her.

FINDING HOPE, Book One of the Savage Cinderella Novella series, picks up a year after Brianna Hathaway’s return from the wild. As she and Justin struggle to work through her recovery, Brinn must come to terms with who she is and discover her place in this strange new world. When Cody asks for her help in solving a kidnapping case for the FBI, it brings her worst nightmares to the surface. But will it be what she needs to finally put it all behind her and move on? Or will it lead her down a path into a dangerous world? A child is missing…and time is running out.

Follow Brinn, Justin, Cody, and a cast of new characters through a series of novellas. Each story will bring a new adventure, another crime to solve, and more danger for Brinn and company as they delve into the world of human trafficking.

Now available in paperback!

Enjoy your autumn!

Summer is in Full Swing!

Hey Readers,

I hope you’re enjoying this lovely August weather and staying cool. I can’t believe summer is almost over already. I have to admit I’ve been slacking a bit. The weather has been too nice to ignore and the sunny days have been calling me away from my writing routine. Blueberry picking anyone?Riley Blueberry picking

Rest assured, I’m still working on book 2 in my SAVAGE CINDERELLA Novella Series, LOST BOYS, and hope to have it out before the end of the year. Watch for the cover reveal next month! If you haven’t jumped on board and read SAVAGE CINDERELLA or FINDING HOPE (Book 1 in the series), I hope you’ll check them out.

Sunset on the Cape

Sunset over Cape Cod

Sisters camping

Hanging with my besties!

So here’s what I’ve really been up to this summer. June had me super busy with the release of FINDING HOPE, but I was able to make time for some R&R with a yoga retreat on the Cape with some of my yoga pals and a family camping trip in July. It’s been a long time since I’ve camped with little ones and I’d forgotten how much work it is! It wasn’t very restful with three kiddos in tow, but I managed to eek out some fun in the sun with my besties (aka. beasties, LOL).

Cultural highlights this summer included a play at the Williamstown Theater, aptly named ROMANCE NOVELS FOR DUMMIES with Justin Long. Yes…he is as adorable in real life as he is on TV and the play was awesome! I also attended a Blues Brother’s Band concert here in town and am prepping for CT Fiction Fest in early September.FF 2016 Graphic I love writer’s conferences and had to miss this year’s Nationals, so I’m really looking forward to connecting again with my writing community. In addition to chilling with my peeps, I’ll be presenting a workshop–To-do’s and Don’ts of Self-Publishing. I’ve learned so much during my five years as an Indie author, I’m looking forward to sharing some great tips with my fellow writers. If you’re looking for a great weekend writing conference, we still have openings! Visit for registration details.

I can’t even begin to think about October’s crazy busy schedule! With the Granville Harvest Fair, the Boston Book Fair, and some local appearances, the fall is shaping up to be a whirlwind of writing-related activity. I’ll keep you posted about dates and upcoming releases.

For now, enjoy the rest of your summer and don’t let it get away from you too soon.

What have you been up to this summer?

Stay well and be blessed!

Smashwords’ Summer/Winter sale, FREE books, and What’s New?

Hello Dear Readers,

I hope you’re all enjoying your summer and this fine stretch of weather we’re having…at least here in New England. I’ve been a bit out of touch these past weeks. A gruelingly busy but fun camping trip with the family was followed by one of my back blowouts that knocked me off my feet for several days. I hate when that happens! Thankfully, I bounced back quickly with the help of my health care teammates and lots of ice, e-stim, gentle stretching, and rest.

9-facebook-squareIf you suffer from chronic back pain, you know how quickly life can be derailed by one wrong move. Even when we do everything “right,” there are no guarantees we’ll be spared the occasional mishap that drops us to our knees and strikes fear in our hearts. It’s natural to go into panic mode, wondering if you’ll ever get better and thinking that this is how life will be from now on. If not treated properly, back pain can put you out of commission for weeks or even months. With proper care, I’ve gotten it down to about four days to full recovery. If you want to know how, check out OVERCOME YOUR SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE, where you’ll find tips on exercise, nutrition, finding a health care team, and avoiding the ergonomic nightmares that lead us down this frustrating path to begin with. Injuries happen, accidents are sometimes unavoidable, but what we do to promote our own recovery can make all the difference in how quickly and completely we recover. I feel your pain and I’m here to help!

PJSharon_FindingHope_800pxNow that I’m back up to snuff, I’ll be working on Book #2 in my SAVAGE CINDERELLA NOVELLA series–working title–“LOST BOYS.” In book 1, FINDING HOPE, Brinn, Justin, Cody, and Dani are pulled into a human trafficking ring and risk their lives to save young Hope Chandler from kidnappers. When Cody goes missing in book 2, Brinn, Justin, and Dani travel to Columbia on a dangerous rescue mission. But what they find when they get there draws them into the jungles of South America on a search for a group of missing boys and brings them face to face with a powerful and deadly foe.

I’m hoping to have the second novella out by year’s end!

If you haven’t started the series yet, what are you waiting for? The original novel, SAVAGE CINDERELLA, is available this month for only .99 cents and the novella (30,000 word/150 pages) FINDING HOPE is a mere $1.99!

If you received an advanced copy of the novella or have already read it, I’d appreciate a quick review. A sentence or two about what you liked (or didn’t) is an amazing help to me as an author. In this incredibly competitive world of publishing, a book is only discoverable to readers through reviews and word of mouth recommendations. You have the power to make or break an author’s success!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
