Release Day!

Happy Tuesday, friends and readers. Today marks the release of FINDING HOPE, book one in the Savage Cinderella Novella series I’ve been working on. When I originally wrote SAVAGE CINDERELLA and chose to self-publish it five years ago, I had no idea readers would fall so in love with Brinn’s story of survival and her journey to finding happiness. It turns out that was only the beginning!

Now you can follow Brinn, Justin, Cody, and a cast of new characters through a series of novellas (30-40k word short novels). Each story will bring a new adventure, another crime to solve, and more danger for Brinn and company as they delve into the world of human trafficking. In FINDING HOPE, we pick up the story a year after Brinn Hathaway’s return from the wild. As she and Justin struggle to work through her recovery, Brinn must come to terms with who she is and discover her place in this strange new world. When Cody asks for her help in solving a kidnapping case for the FBI, it brings her worst nightmares screaming to the surface. But will it be exactly what she needs to finally put it all behind her and move on? Or will it lead her down a path into a dangerous world? A child is missing…and time is running out.

And if you missed last week’s appearance on Topic Time with the quirky and loveable Harrison Blake Young, you can view it on The Raynham Channel’s fabulous YouTube channel or watch it here. We talked about books, how I got to where I am, and the possibility of turning my books into movies! Wouldn’t that be cool? As my pal Harrison would say, “Stay tuned folks!” And don’t forget to rate and review it on the IMDb site.

I think that’s all the news for now. I hope you have a safe and happy Independence Day.

Earth Day and Giving Thanks

First, a huge THANKS to all who participated in the Authors in Bloom event. Winners were randomly chosen by Random.org. and Rafflecopter. Since I had a few snafus with my website and leaving a comment was a bit of a challenge, I chose two winners to receive signed copies of my non-fiction holistic living, self-help guide, OVERCOME YOUR SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE. Congrats to Catherine and Michelle!

For those of you who didn’t win, I’ve decided to leave the e-book available at the sale price of $2.99 until April 30th!

On another note, I love to celebrate Earth Day! April 22 is not only a day to acknowledge the greatness and beauty of nature on this planet, it’s a day that all of us should recommit ourselves to taking care of this wondrous gift we call home. Below is a list of simple ways you can honor the planet and do your part in being a good steward. Please share these ideas with friends, family, and especially your children. It’s up to us to teach and empower the next generation to love and respect the Earth.

  1. Plant a tree. (Combat deforestation.)
  2. Create a butterfly and hummingbird garden. (Check this out to get started!)
  3. Promote a healthy bee habitat. (Thanks to the use of nasty chemical pesticides, bees are in crisis and populations are dwindling. major hive collapses are happening worldwide and without these busy little pollinators, food sources will be impossible to sustain. NO BEES…NO FOOD. It’s that simple. Civic groups such as AVAAS and many others  are taking a stand and offer excellent ways that you can make a difference.)Bee on a coneflower pic
  4. Use natural pest control and avoid use of chemical pesticides. (Use homemade pest control. Here are 10 easy to make organic pesticides.)
  5. Pick up litter whenever you see it. (Take a bag with you on your walk and pick up trash on the side of the road. It’s everywhere! STOP littering.)
  6. Recycle, upcycle, and conserve. (Reuse plastic bags and containers, and avoid buying bottled water by filling a BPH-free water bottle at home and carrying it with you at all times. Fix leaky faucets, take shorter showers, and reduce waste.)
  7. Compost. (Composting is easy and reduces household food waste while promoting healthy soil regeneration.)
  8. Visit a National Park. (National Parks are greatly underfunded these days and depend on echo-friendly tourists to help support and care for the wild and protected places. Donate, visit, and keep our National Parks alive for generations to come.)
  9. Support Earth friendly legislation. (Pay attention to legislation regarding climate change and be proactive in contacting legislators to share your concerns. If enough voices are heard, change is inevitable.)
  10. Reduce your carbon footprint. (Hike, bike, ride share, turn off lights and computers when not in use, and generally reduce your consumption of fossil fuels.)

There you have it! Enjoy your Earth Day and find some creative ways to show you care.

In other news, I’m super excited about revamping some of my book covers this Spring. Stay tuned for cover reveals, teasers from my upcoming Savage Cinderella Novella, FINDING HOPE, and a fresh look for WESTERN DESERT, Book 2 in the Chronicles of Lily Carmichael Trilogy.

Here’s where I’ll be in the coming weeks. Watch for the following appearances:

On Thursday, May 5th from 7-9 p.m. I’ll be at the Enfield Public Library, 104 Middle Rd. Enfield, CT. speaking about the writer’s life and overcoming a sedentary lifestyle.

June 8th at 5:00 p.m. on Boston’s Public Access television, I’ll be a guest on Topic Time with Harrison Blake Young. More details to come!

In the meantime, I’m busy working on my novella series and hope to have that ready early this summer. Subscribe to this blog or sign up for my newsletter for more information on release dates.

Thanks so much for all your support!

Peace and blessings,

PJ

Dianne Venetta_AIB Logo_2015

How it will work:

Authors participating will post their giveaway, gardening tip, recipe or both on their website, beginning April 7th and leaving their contest open through April 16th.  You will have 10 days to enter each individual author contest and then submit your entry for the grand prize!!  To win the grand prize, you must visit each and every author on the hop.  Most authors will post all the links of participating authors, but I was unable to do so here without losing my comments section…grrrr.

(Addendum: To activate comments section, just click on the title of my blog at the top of the page. This should refresh the site and the comments should show up. If you are unable to leave a comment, please enter the Rafflecopter at the bottom of the page. I will choose a winner from the Rafflecopter giveaway and also from those who leave a comment. Thanks for your patience and persistence!)

Please visit Dainne Vanetta’s website to find the author link list at any point in time. Some authors might offer more than one entry to win, ie. a “follow” on Twitter or a “tweet,” maybe even a visit to their facebook or pinterest page, however only one is required to enter.

How do I submit my grand prize entry?

Grand prize entrants will be entered via a rafflecopter giveaway widget, available on the initial and final landing page of this hop, located on BloominThyme.  All entries (and actions) will be verified to deem winners.

What can I expect out of this hop?

Each author will be posting a giveaway, gardening tip, recipe or both!  It’s a spring celebration designed to introduce you to authors and give you a chance to win prizes. Individual authors may offer more than one chance to win their individual giveaway, so increase your odds and enter them all!

What will be given away?

Everything from books to swag, promotional products and more! The grand prize is an e-reader of your choice (up to $200 value). A second prize of $25 gift card ~ winner’s choice which e-book retailer gift card, available to INTL residents (VOID where prohibited by law).

Authors will note US or INTL for their giveaway eligibility. Where US or INTL is not specifically noted, US eligibility will apply. The grand prize is available for US entrants only. Winners will be announced on the landing page, BloominThyme after the contest ends.

What do I do when it’s all over?

By April 18th we will post the grand prize winners on the main page and the landing page.  Individual authors will announce and contact the winners of their author-specific giveaways. You will be required to claim your prize according to each giveaway’s terms and conditions.

So have fun and let’s start hopping!

PJ’s top tips for injury prevention and back care for gardeners.Bee on a coneflower pic

  1. Start slow. Realize you’ve been sedentary for most of the winter…or at the very least, have likely not engaged in this particular activity for several months. Pace yourself!
  2. Take frequent breaks and be sure to stay hydrated. Keep a bottle of water handy at all times while in the garden.
  3. Use the right tool for the right job. Try sitting on a low garden stool rather than bending over for long periods of time, invest in knee pads or a kneeling pad to save your knees, and buy sturdy gardening gloves to protect your hands. If shovels, rakes, or trowels are broken or in disrepair, replace them and buy the best ergonomically designed tools you can find. It’s worth the extra money to save your body from injury!
  4. Watch your body mechanics. Bend at your knees and hips, NOT your back, and know your limitations. Don’t lift more than is safe for you! Rocks are heavier than they look and slinging 25-40 pound bags of dirt and mulch can take it’s toll. Break up loads into smaller/lighter cargo, ask for help, use a cart or dolly, or hire someone to do the job.

proper lifting

 Improper lifting

5. Consider yourself a domestic athlete and do a warm up and stretch before and after you tackle hours of lawn work or gardening. A hot bath with Epsom salts and a few drops of lavender essential oil can do wonders after a long day of pruning and planting. It’s not pampering, it’s prevention! Your body will thank you.

Most importantly, enjoy your time with nature and rejoice in the power of co-creation!

To keep you healthy and energized, here’s a favorite smoothie recipe from the book:

Green Choco Monkey Smoothie

Inspired by my addiction to the Coco Monkey Smoothie from the Granby Village Health Food Store in Granby, CT., I’ve adapted their recipe and added a few twists.

Choco monkey smoothieIngredients:

1 cup Silk Chocolate Almond Milk (or make your own chocolate almond milk by adding 2 tsp. of cocoa powder and a ½ tsp. vanilla extract to your homemade almond milk)

1TBSP. almond butter (or organic peanut butter)

1 frozen banana (peeled and cut into pieces)

1 scoop Green’s Organics Superfood (Amazonian Chocolate) powder.

1 tsp. vanilla extract

(For extra thickness, add 2 TBSP. plain Greek yogurt, and for an extra boost of energy, try adding a tsp. of Maca powder)

 Instructions:

Blend all ingredients on high (Smoothie setting on Blendtec) for 45-60 seconds until smooth. Drink and enjoy. Best shake you’ll ever taste and packed with nutrition. Makes two servings with about 250 calories each.

Enjoy!
