Read a Romance Month 2015

Hey Readers,

Read A Romance Month 1I’m celebrating the month of August by joining dozens of romance authors for the Read a Romance Month event. I am honored to be invited to participate by Lorelei’s Lit Lair and Bobbi Dumas, writer for NPR and Kirkus reviews. (Follow the links to find them on FB). If there were ever two super fans of romance, it would be Lorelei and Bobbi. They have been amazing advocates of the genre, and if an author is lucky enough to show up on their radar and they enjoy your books well enough, they’ll shout about it to the rooftops and beyond! Thanks for including me, Lorelei and Bobbi!

Our theme, The Joy of Romance is a topic near and dear to my heart. Specifically, teen romance. Because I love the thrill of first loves, awkward “almost” moments, and those emotional roller coaster rides that teens call “relationships,” I read—and write—YA lit.

Like many YA authors, I fell into reading about teen romance with the Twilight saga. Bella and Edward captured the hearts of teen readers (and many adult fans) who latched on to their quest for that promise of eternal love. Nothing is more compelling for lovers of romance than the thought that love conquers all—even death. Romeo and Juliet anyone? Thanks to the heroes and heroines of a thousand romance novels, we all crave the idea of a happily ever after and the possibility of finding a soul mate to spend our lives with—if not our eternity.

What I enjoy most about writing YA fiction is the ability to impart some wisdom and understanding in a way that doesn’t feel preachy. Teens can identify with the plight of the characters in my books and are allowed to see how they work through their problems, hopefully reaching a conclusion for themselves about what works and what doesn’t in relationships. I believe adults enjoy YA romance for the same reason. They know that hindsight is 20/20, can see the error of the protagonist’s ways, and can’t wait to watch them evolve into a more mature person by story’s end. They also get to experience all those firsts again without the actual drama, LOL.

In spite of the inherent angst, YA romance is more about the journey to a “hopefully” rather than a “happily ever after.” Since most real life teen romances last about as long as a Taylor Swift song, teens read more for the “idea” of a lasting love or the mechanics of how it works. We don’t expect our teen characters to marry and ride off into the sunset at the end of the book, but teen readers want to understand this crazy law of attraction and the ins and outs of negotiating the fundamentals of first love amid family drama and acne. The hormonal upheaval, the torturous moments waiting by the phone, and the ever-present insecurities that plague every teenager with the question…am I worthy of being loved, drives readers to voraciously devour teen romance novels.

Hopefully, what they get from these books, is the concept that they were worthy all along and that the love of another does NOT define them. The days of the damsel are happily over! The teens of today love kick-butt heroines and flawed heroes, as do adult readers. With so many fabulous YA novels to choose from, readers are bound to get the message that they can do or be whatever they want and that love and romance is simply the icing on the cake.

Stop by Lorelei’s Lit Lair to read a lovely post about her journey to falling in love with romance and how one romance author changed her life!

Questions:

Big pond Kayaking1 – Tell us about a moment in your life when you experienced sheer joy.

I “practice” joy every day, so coming up with one moment is challenging. I say practice because sometimes it’s easy to lose our joy beneath the day to day struggles and worries that weigh us down. It takes effort to put aside the negativity and focus on the beauty of life. I find joy in the smallest things. A toad in my garden, a hummingbird floating around my petunia basket, and the incredible smile of my fifteen month old granddaughter.Riley at the pool 71015 Spending time with her brings me countless moments of joy and even when I am alone floating on a still water pond in my kayak, I am easily overcome with the sheer bliss of sharing in the abundance of nature.

phone pics 279 (2013_06_07 00_53_00 UTC)2 – Tell us about a place that brings you joy, or is attached to a memory of joy.

Sitting in my garden reading a good book is probably the closest thing to Heaven on Earth for me. Whether I’m being entertained by dragonflies, bumblebees, or by the memorable characters in a sweet romance, I am never alone there.

3 – Tell us about a sound that brings you joy.

I love to sing, and thankfully, I’m lucky enough to be able to carry a tune that has a pleasant sound, so I can often be found singing or humming throughout my workday. Here’s a sample if you’re interested:

The only thing that lifts my spirit more is my granddaughter’s sweet smile and making her giggle—even if it requires that I make ridiculous faces.

4 – What recent book have you read that brought you joy. Why?

I love Diana Gabaldon’s OUTLANDER series. I know those books are fraught with calamity (poor Jamie and Claire), but they are also riddled with beautiful moments of love and redemption that move me to tears and call me to re-read those books again and again. Gabaldon’s descriptions and prose leap off the page for me and make me want to be a better writer.

5 – And for fun, the joy of choice.

Pick your Chris! Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, Chris Pratt, Chris Rock, Chris Evans or Christopher Plummer (circ. 1964 aka Capt. Von Trapp?) – trying for a little diversity!)

600full-christopher-meloni

Any one of these Chris’s would make my list for handsome and talented men, but to break from the crowd, I’ll say Chris Meloni. I still miss him as Elliot Stabler on Law & Order SVU. He played that character brilliantly!

And those steely blue eyes made him the inspiration for a villain in FINDING HOPE, my WIP about kidnap survivor Brinn Hathaway, who helps the FBI on a case that stirs painful memories and drags her back into the line of fire. This upcoming NA Romantic Suspense novella is based on HOLT Medallion winner, SAVAGE CINDERELLA. I’m hoping to have it out by November!

Ally Carter’s Gallagher Girls Series isn’t romance, but it’s a blast and well written. I highly recommend it for young teen readers.

Off to the Big Apple!

Hey Friends and Followers,

I hope you’re all enjoying your summer. I’ve been busy promoting my Chronicles of Lily Carmichael Trilogy and writing up a storm! If you haven’t had a chance to download your copy of WANING MOON for FREE,  it’s still available. Please share the link with friends and family so they, too, can enjoy this entertaining, action-packed first installment in the trilogy.

After taking some time off from writing to, well…deal with life and recuperate from a  long hard winter, you’ll be happy to hear that Stella has gotten her groove back and that I’ve been hard at work on two new projects! I can’t wait to share them with you.

But let me first mention that I–like a few thousand other romance writers–will be headed to New York City later this week to attend the annual National Romance Writers of America Conference. This will be my sixth such excursion, and I can tell you, if it holds a candle to every other national conference I’ve attended, it’s going to be a blast! The five day convention consists of fabulous workshops, plenty of opportunities to schmooze with industry professionals, and a chance to hang out with romance royalty. I’ve had more than one fan girl moment when sharing an elevator with the likes of Nora Roberts or chat with Bella Andre.RWA2013 me and Bella Andre This pic was from RWA Nationals 2013. Miss Andre was gracious and gave me some terrific advice.

One of the things I love most about RWA National (other than all the amazing foodie opportunities) is meeting in person all the people I associate with on-line every day in my writer’s loops, and reconnecting with those I don’t see often enough. It feels like old home week. It’s also a blast putting on some party clothes and dancing the night away with a bunch of wild and crazy romance writers. Those folks know how to have fun! If you can’t be there, the event will be LIVE streaming on https://www.rwa.org/ on Saturday night. To watch a short and entertaining video about the event, check out the Queen of romantic comedy, Kristan Higgins. This is hilarious.

Best of all, I get to celebrate with one of my dear friends, RITA nominee, Katy Lee, author of GRAVE DANGER and several other inspirational romantic suspense stories. Go Katy Lee! Another of my CTRWA and YARWA pals, Patty Blount is also up for a RITA for her YA novel SOME BOYS.  The RITA Awards are for romance writers what the Oscars are for actors, so this is a huge honor for these ladies. I’m super excited and will be there whistling and hooting with the rest of my CTRWA peeps. You can follow our tweets from the conference by searching the hashtag #RWA15, or #RITAGH

And yes, I still need to pack!

In addition to there being plenty of parties and opportunities to socialize, this year I’m a presenter as well as an attendee. On Friday, the 24th, at 12:45, I’ll be speaking about ERGONOMICS and STRETCHING for WRITERS, subtitled, Is your writing killing you? I’ve witnessed first hand through my massage practice and through my many years as a PT Assistant, Personal Trainer and Yoga Instructor, the damage done to the body with prolonged exposure to poor ergonomics and a sedentary lifestyle. It’s one of the reasons I decided to write a non-fiction book and share tips  my clients, students, and fellow writers have found so helpful.

“As a writer and a publicist, I spend a lot of time sitting at my computer.  After learning and following the simple stretching and ergonomics lessons taught by Ms. Sharon, I have less tension and can work for longer periods of time without painful interruption.”

Jennifer F.

Author and CEO of Market or Die Author Services

This leads me to my non-fiction project and one of my favorite things…a COVER REVEAL!

Ready for some more fun?

On the fiction writing front, my current WIP (work in progress), FINDING HOPE (a SAVAGE CINDERELLA Novella), due out in November, is the follow up to Holt Medallion winner, SAVAGE CINDERELLA. It’s now two years later and Brinn Hathaway is adjusting to her life in the real world after surviving in the North Georgia High Country when her kidnapper left her for dead as a child.

Since the protagonist will now be 20 and learning to live in the adult world, the story qualifies as New Adult, but rest assured, it will have the moderate heat level of my other novels and will still be suitable for teens. The novella will focus more on the crime solving aspect and Brinn’s reentry into civilization…think Nell meets Castle. In this first of a planned series of novellas, Brinn will be called on to help solve a kidnapping case by FBI Special Agent Cody Hansen, her boyfriend Justin’s best friend. No worries, though, Justin will be on scene to help–and to ratchet up the tension.

Justin Spencer is an up and coming nature photographer and reporter for Real Life Magazine, and he and Brinn are struggling to negotiate the twists and turns of an adult relationship. Brinn’s working so closely with Cody isn’t making it any easier. Amid the back drop of the steamy Southeast and her stumbling into a human trafficking ring, Brinn has more challenges than even she could have imagined. Needless to say, there will be plenty of conflict, action, adventure, mystery, and yep…romance.

I’ve hit the halfway mark of the first draft, which we writers like to call the sagging middle. It’s the part of the story where nothing seems to be happening and we feel like we’re just putting words on the page that are taking us nowhere. Which usually means (according to my pal, and romantic suspense queen, Jessica Andersen), that someone needs to kiss, or something needs to be blown up. I feel a kissing scene coming on! Still plenty of time to blow something up later, LOL. The question will be, who will Brinn be kissing?

#TeamJustin?Justin 2#TeamCody  Cody Hansen

 I’d love your input!

Leave a comment below letting me know how you like the new cover and/or if you have a preference for #TeamJustin, or #TeamCody. If you mention you’re interested, you’ll be entered to win a FREE Download of THE Girls of Thompson Lake Box Set to celebrate Christmas in July, since the thought of snow was the only thing that kept me cool today, LOL. Just wanted to share the love…

Contest ends at midnight August 1st.

Next month, I’ll be participating in the Read a Romance Month.

Thanks for stopping by!

Have a fun summer, and stay safe and healthy on whatever adventure awaits you. I’ll be chillin’ in the Big Apple!

Springing into April!

Hello Readers!

Thanks for stopping in for a visit. April kind of sprung up on me (pardon the pun). Mostly because there have been few signs of Spring here in the Berkshires. Despite today being one of the first sixty degree days of the year, and my driveway a clear indication of the arrival of “mud season,” I’m still inundated with snow. I can’t tell you how I long for a warm sunny day at the beach!Snowshoeing in the garden in March 2015

After a month off of writing–my first such indulgence in many years–I’m back at it. I needed a bit of rest after the frenzy of releasing HEALING WATERS and my GIRLS of THOMPSON LAKE box set at the end of 2014. If you missed those releases, here are the details of how you can add them to your collection of PJ Sharon Books!PJSharon_HealingWaters_200

Sign up for my newsletter and receive a full copy for FREE. The only other way to read the novella is to grab the full set for $3.99–a bargain, I’m sure you’ll agree. If you’ve already read the books and enjoyed them, gift them to a friend!)

If you’d like to hear more about how I came up with my stories, you can listen to my recent Blog talk radio interview with Librarians on the Air with Tabatha Pope.

Here’s what else I’ve been up to:

Following the holidays, my husband fell on the ice and broke his wrist, which resulted in household projects coming to a screeching halt and me picking up the lion’s share of household duties through the winter. The good news is, I’ve added some more muscle from lifting those 40 pound bags of pellets into the pellet stove twice a day. The even better news is that my darling husband is now over the worst (surgery and pins) and is rehabbing nicely–so I can now get back to my writing and he can resume his home improvement projects.

On the fiction front, I’m working on my first SAVAGE CINDERELLA Novella! I don’t have a release date or title yet, but as soon as I have title and cover, I’ll be sure to let you know. Wattpad readers have been incredibly supportive (with over 3 million reads of SAVAGE CINDERELLA and tons of wonderful comments), so I figured I’d better give them more of what they love. This first novella (I do plan a series) will have Brinn being called in to help solve a kidnapping, dredging up all of her old nightmares and threatening her tentative bond with Justin. The story picks up two years after Brinn’s return to the world, making this clearly a New Adult story rather than YA. A lot has happened and Brinn is struggling to find a purpose and a plan for her life, even if it means putting herself in danger and losing the one person who has vowed to protect her. I’m very excited to revisit these characters and hope to get the first novella out this summer! Stay tuned…

Regarding the non-fiction project, ERGONOMICS and Self-Care (A practical Guide for Writers, Readers, Desk Jockeys and Couch Potatoes), I’m slowly making progress and plan to step up my word count over the next few months.  I’m looking forward to diving back in and hoping to have it finished by fall. For now, let me share some of my favorite Health Management tips from the book.

1.) SNACK HEALTHY-Pack almond butter and apple (or celery) for a mid-morning or afternoon pick-me-up, drink SMOOTHIES (the kind made with organic fruits and vegetables), try hard boiled eggs for a quick grab and go snack, eat a handful of almonds or walnuts, or enjoy your favorite yogurt (high protein, low sugar) to keep that blood sugar steady. The trick is choosing nutrient dense foods in small amounts throughout the day so those cravings and hunger pangs don’t send you scrounging for the cookies.

2.) HYDRATE-Your body weight divided by three=how many ounces per day of water you need. Fill a water bottle first thing in the morning and sip on it everywhere you go. Refill as needed.

3.) EXERCISE-Sweat for 30 Minutes 5x/week. It’s only 30 minutes! You can do anything for 30 minutes!!

4.) YES FOODS: Avocado, salmon (oily fish), eggs, nuts (almonds and walnuts in moderation), berries (organic), sprouted whole grain breads (Ezekiel 4:9), coconut oils, almond milk, goat cheese, fruits & veggies (variety is the spice of life-think rainbows!), spices & herbs (cilantro, basil, rosemary, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon), and the best “yes” food of all; dark chocolate-YAY!!!

5.) NO FOODS: Canola oil and other polyunsaturated oils. Avoid hydrogenated oils, refined sugars, soda, white flour products, highly processed foods, fast foods and restaurant binges. Pizza (make your own at home, use sprouted wholegrain crust, and add veggies with lean meats and cheeses), ice cream (okay in small amounts, but best if you can at least go organic), ditch the cow’s milk products entirely if you can.

I’ll have more healthy tips for you next time!

So there you have it. That’s what’s going on with me. How about you? Do you have Easter/Holiday plans? Spring break? Travel plans? I love to hear from readers, so feel free to leave a comment below!

Celebrating 10 Years!

Hello Dear Readers,

If you stopped by my site, you’re probably expecting me to be talking about my writing and my books. But today, I’d like to take a moment to celebrate my ten year anniversary as a business owner! It was in the Spring of 2005 that I founded ABSolute Fitness and Therapeutic Bodywork, a private practice massage therapy, personal training, and yoga business.
2002_0511_125033AA I had spent twenty years prior to that working as a Physical Therapy Assistant, teaching learn to skate and power skating programs, and raising my two sons. All that time I had been wondering if I would ever have the opportunity to be my own boss, set my own schedule, and be paid what I felt my time was worth to me.

Then one day, around the time I turned forty and my youngest son was in high school, I decided it was now or never. I’d been studying yoga for several years and felt that my PT and martial arts training, along with my skills as a skating instructor were the perfect combination that would make me an excellent yoga instructor. However, I wasn’t ready to open my own studio and dive into it full time when my hands on practice was such an integral part of me. I’d done a tremendous amount of continuing education in the field of manual therapy, and more than anything, I wanted to treat patients with a more holistic approach. So I worked part time for a year while I was in massage school, took my personal training certification, and did a year of yoga teacher training before quitting my “day job” and embarking on an epic adventure into the healing arts and entrepreneurship.

It was also around that time that I had rekindled a romance with “the one who got away,” and we moved up into the Berkshires, an hour away from where I’d established my practice. That put a slight hitch in my giddy-up, but I love our country home and credit this major shift to awakening my muse and starting me on the path to writing romantic fiction. tolland house 06_2005 011

I persevered, bought an economical vehicle (I love my VW TDI and its 45 MPG), and traveled an hour to work 4x per week for the next seven years. Then one day, on my long ride to work, I realized  how much time I was spending in the car, and added it to all the time I was sitting at home and writing. I found that at least 8 hours of my week were a complete waste of time…unless listening to books on CD can be considered productive. In my business owner’s eyes, it was lost revenue and a full day’s work I was missing out on.

So I moved my practice to East Granby, CT., which cut my drive time in half, but meant starting from near scratch building a new clientele, since only a handful of my regulars followed me across the river. I’ve slowly built up the business again, but it hasn’t come easy or been steady, and I think I know why. The greatest struggle in running two businesses is that neither one gets my full attention. And where your attention and intention are…so lies your success. This makes perfect sense to me, but what’s a busy lady like me to do? Eighty hour work weeks are clearly not the answer. I had to remind myself that I am the boss! I can work as much or as little as i want. I just have to be able to live with the result, LOL.

I’ve had to take a hard look at my two jobs and try to find some balance.

Now, I work three days a week at the office (doing between 8, to as many as 15, massages a week) and then I’m home three days a week to work on writing related activities. I try to give myself at least one day off a week, but inevitably, I end up working on some part of the writing business on my “off” day. If I don’t at least go through my e-mail in-box, it quickly builds up to a half day of just weeding through and catching up, which is NOT a productive use of my time.

Another solution for me is integrating the two jobs. I’ve amassed a fair number of young adult fiction now (with nine products currently on my cybershelf), and this year I plan on adding two novella length sequels to SAVAGE CINDERELLA, my Wattpad phenom with 3 million reads. I’m hoping that some of those readers will appreciate more of Brinn and her journey. In the meantime, I’m working on an Ergonomics and Self Care book, which will incorporate my health and wellness knowledge with what I’ve learned from my writing life.

I’m so excited about this project! I already have some workshops planned at the upcoming NECRWA conference in April and the National RWA conference in NYC in July! It will allow me to help so many people who are suffering from the “sedentary lifestyle syndrome” that is running rampant, and will give me a focus for growing my writing career as well.(Read more about my favorite writing conferences over at the Secrets of 7 Scribes.) I’ll be talking more about this project as it comes together, but for now, I’ll leave you with my TOP 3  exercises for correcting your posture.

Rounded shoulder, forward head posture is the root of all evil when it comes to contributing factors for neck pain. Anterior muscles of the chest and shoulders tighten while posterior musculature (designed to hold us upright) become overstretched and weak. Learn where good posture is and check in frequently throughout the day to find it again. Remind yourself to sit up straight, shoulders back, head in alignment with shoulders and hips.

1)      Stretch pectoral and anterior shoulder muscles by clasping hands behind back and squeezing shoulder blades together. Take deep breaths and hold 10-20 seconds. Repeat hourly to combat the effects of prolonged sitting.Pec stretch 1

2)      Bank robber exercise: Stand with your back against a wall with your feet six inches from the wall and shoulder width apart. Raise your arms so that your shoulders and elbows are at 90 degree angles and the backs of your arms are resting against the wall. Your hands may not reach the wall at first if your shoulders and chest muscles are tight, but that’s okay. Your flexibility will improve over time. Do the best you can to get as much of the back of your arms to touch as possible, and then slowly raise and lower arms in a “stick-em-up” motion, maintaining contact with the wall behind you. Repeat this motion slowly, 5-10x, respecting your ROM limitations, and focusing on your breath throughout the movement.Bank robber 1

3)      Serving Hors d’oeuvres: Stand up straight with elbows in at your sides and bent to 90 degrees/palms facing up as if holding a tray on each hand. Keep your elbows in and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Rotate your hands outward as if serving hors d’oeuvres to people on either side of you. Repeat 5-10 times slowly, engaging the external rotators of the shoulders to strengthen postural muscles and stave off muscle imbalances. Basically, I give you these silly images to help you remember the exercise. Obviously, no trays—or guests—are needed to complete this activity. Horsdeouvers 2

I’d like to say that being my own boss is easier than working for someone else, but I’d be lying. There is a ruthless sense of responsibility that goes with it, driving me to be tougher on myself than any boss I’ve ever had. I put in longer hours, I only have myself to blame when something fails to produce a positive result, and when I don’t work, I don’t get paid, so vacations are something I have to save up for and plan ahead. But those are just the downside to owning my business. The tradeoffs for the upside.

The upside comes in the form of the freedom to make my own schedule, be in control of my productivity, and the satisfaction of knowing that whatever happens, my fate is in my own hands. Those are priceless commodities and so worth all the hard work. I can’t imagine going back and working for anyone else again. If you’ve thought about this for yourself, don’t let fear of failure stop you! Failure is the best teacher, and the only real failure is in not trying.

Here’s to women in business and being your own boss!YA love1 (2013_02_16 17_00_55 UTC) You can do it!!

If you could be your own boss, what would be your perfect job?

In keeping faithful to my young adult readership, I thought I’d share a letter from me to my teen self…lessons in beauty.

Dear Teen Me,

Once upon a time, I was you. I didn’t feel pretty, or popular, or important. I was plain and tomboyish, and didn’t feel like I fit in. It didn’t seem like my opinion mattered, or even that my voice was heard most days. There were times I felt invisible.

You know what it was like growing up in the chaos of a house filled with kids–the youngest of seven, and living in the shadow of four older sisters and two big brothers, all vying for the spotlight in whatever crazy ways they found to stand out in the crowd. You fought to overcome the ugliness of your parents’ addictions, the familial history of mental illness, and the deaths that would rob you of a childhood far too soon.

Like most teenagers, you rebelled–crawling inside yourself in an effort to escape–to find some kind of solid ground or safehaven. But life shifted at every turn. The choices you made led you to dark, dangerous places. At times, you feared you might not survive. Still you persevered. You kept looking up…taking one more step…trying to find your way out of the pit and back to sanity. And each step brought you closer to discovering the truth of who you were…a beautiful child of God.

2002_0807_180625AA (2013_06_02 01_59_31 UTC)Despite the chaos and all those obstacles, you discovered a light in the darkness–something special in yourself to believe in. I’m so glad you did.

Soaring across the ice set you free. You learned to set goals for yourself, took risks and got back up when you fell, growing stronger each time. You realized that talent wasn’t a substitute for hard work. And you found the courage to be true to yourself, even when it meant standing and fighting for what you wanted. In spite of the struggles, you found the strength and courage to persevere. At last, you accepted your own beauty and the power of being you.

Maybe you wouldn’t be a famous figure skater, or a rich supermodel, but it didn’t matter. There was always tomorrow and a new adventure awaited at every turn. As you came to see yourself with new eyes and embraced the beautiful child within, it became clear that you were smart first, and beautiful second–and of the two, you knew that being smart would get you closer to your goals every time.

As you grew through young adulthood, you were known to be kind, generous, and a person that others could count on. The light that shone from deep inside your heart and soul radiated and touched everyone around you, making their lives that much brighter. You intuitively understood the healing power of love, and as you would later come to see, it would lead you to your true purpose in life–to share the gift of healing with others.

The death of your mother when you were sixteen taught you so much. Mostly, that beauty was as fleeting a thing as morning dew. But also that even in death, there is healing. With compassion comes forgiveness, and with letting go comes peace. At such a young age, you saw that life was precious and learned that time was an unbeatable foe, out to steal beauty right out from under you. But you knew that nothing and no one could steal your integrity, your will to not only survive, but to thrive and be a beacon to others.

At seventeen, you accepted the challenges of motherhood with grace and maturity beyond your years. Your choice to love, support, and raise a child on your own took more courage and selfless determination than any one person should be capable of. A testament to human resilience and I’m sure you’d agree, the power of faith. That “believing what you cannot see will come to pass” kind of faith that can overcome any fear.

I want to tell you now, how proud I am of you for pushing past your fear, facing the darkness head on, and reaching beyond it to touch the stars.

Never forget that you are loved for exactly who you are, and that you are beautiful, inside and out.

With deep and abiding love,

Me

Seventeen year old figure skater Penny Trudeau is a liar. She knows it, hates it, and can’t help herself. The truth is too hard and ugly. Her mother is dying of cancer, her father treats her as if she’s invisible, and she is starving—for food, for love, for acceptance, and mostly for the perfection that is just beyond her reach. When she finds comfort in the arms of Carter McCray, a hockey hunk a few years too old for her, the lies begin a chain of events that have dire consequences, not the least of which are a rape she can’t remember and a pregnancy she can’t ignore. If she reveals her secrets, will the shock and disappointment mean the end for her mother? Or has her mother been keeping the biggest secret of all?
